“MacBook Ultra”: Apple's First OLED Touchscreen Mac Slips Toward Early 2027

The laptop long described as the “OLED MacBook Pro” is now expected to arrive as a new top tier called MacBook Ultra — the first high-end MacBook redesign in five years. The window has moved: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman puts it between late 2026 and early 2027, with early 2027 now looking more likely because of the global memory chip shortage. Ming-Chi Kuo expects mass production to begin by late 2026.

  • Display: First OLED Mac — hybrid tandem two-stack panels with an oxide TFT backplane, replacing mini-LED. Slightly larger at 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch (per Samsung Display) vs. today's 14.2 and 16.2.
  • Touch: The first Mac with direct touch input, described as “touch-friendly, not touch-first” — a normal clamshell, not a convertible, with a reinforced hinge so the screen doesn't wobble when tapped.
  • No more notch: A hole-punch camera and an iPhone-style Dynamic Island that expands for Siri alerts, AirPods status, and other live activity.
  • Chips: Ships with the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max — the same silicon in today's MacBook Pro — because Apple scrapped the M6 Pro/Max generation.

Released: Conversational Siri Arrives with macOS 27 Golden Gate

This one came true. After months of rumors about a delayed AI Siri, Apple confirmed at WWDC 2026 that macOS 27 Golden Gate would ship with the new conversational Siri — and on September 14, 2026 it did:

  • Context-aware conversations instead of one-shot commands, with a companion Siri app and better on-device indexing
  • In-app actions built on third-generation Apple Foundation Models
  • Released: macOS 27 Golden Gate (build 26A428) shipped on Monday, September 14, 2026, alongside Visual Intelligence (Shift-Cmd-Space), Describe a Shortcut, Safari tab topics and a Liquid Glass transparency slider; a 27.x update is already in developer beta

Resolved: Tahoe's Send-Off Ends With 26.7, Now the Latest for Intel Macs

We asked in early July whether Apple would ship one more Tahoe rollup before Golden Gate. It did — and then some. Tahoe 26.6 (build 25G72) arrived July 27, followed by 26.6.1 (25G76) on August 6 with a Screen Sharing authentication bypass fix and 26.6.2 (25G83) on August 17 with around 29 CVE fixes, mostly in WebKit. On September 14, the same day macOS 27 Golden Gate was released, Apple shipped macOS Tahoe 26.7 (build 25G229) with 100+ security fixes and no new features. It is now the latest macOS for Intel Macs.

Older Macs were covered too: Sequoia 15.8 also landed on September 14, while macOS Sonoma reached end of support in August 2026, with 14.8.9 (23J631) as its final release.

Golden Gate's Betas Are Quietly Laying Touchscreen Groundwork

If a touch Mac is coming, macOS has to meet it halfway — and testers keep finding hints in the Golden Gate betas. Reported so far:

  • Direct touch input support inside Sidecar
  • Pull-to-refresh behavior in Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar
  • A new pill-shaped Siri interface in Spotlight

Apple is separately said to be building touch-optimized controls that swell into larger targets when you tap rather than click, plus iPad-style pinch-to-zoom and fast scrolling across the OS.

Apple Scraps the M6 Pro and M6 Max, Skipping Ahead to M7

We previously reported that M6 silicon was in production for late-2026 Macs. That's no longer the story: Apple is said to have cancelled the high-end M6 Pro and M6 Max and jumped to M7 Pro and M7 Max, tuned for AI work with upgraded neural accelerators, faster graphics, and more memory bandwidth.

The practical effect is odd: the MacBook Ultra arrives with year-old M5 Pro/Max chips, and a second-generation model with M7 silicon is penciled in for late 2027 — potentially only months later.
