Two weeks after macOS 27 Golden Gate shipped, Apple released three Mac updates on September 28, 2026: macOS 27.0.1 (build 26A434) for Golden Gate, and macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 (25G241) and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 (24H32) for everything older. The Golden Gate update is routine bug fixes. The Tahoe and Sequoia updates close a CoreGraphics hole that Apple says may already have been used in a targeted attack.
macOS 27.0.1: Bug Fixes, No Security Content
For Macs already on macOS 27 Golden Gate, 27.0.1 is an unglamorous update. Apple's release notes say it “fixes bugs,” the enterprise notes name a single fix for Platform SSO sign-in, and Apple's security page lists no CVEs. The download is about 3.3 GB, large for a point-point release, which suggests more under-the-hood changes than Apple is describing. Users who hit Mission Control glitches and Liquid Glass rendering oddities in 27.0 reported mixed results, with the bigger clean-up arriving later in macOS 27.2.
Tahoe 26.7.1 and Sequoia 15.8.1: Install These Now
The important releases of the day were for older Macs. macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 (build 25G241) and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 (build 24H32) each fix one bug: CVE-2026-86950, an out-of-bounds write in CoreGraphics that lets a maliciously crafted file run arbitrary code. Apple's advisory says the flaw “may have been exploited in a highly targeted attack” against iPhones on versions before iOS 27, and credits Meta's product security team with the report.
Targeted attacks of this kind rarely reach ordinary users, but the exploit exists and the patch is tiny, so there is no reason to wait. macOS 27.0 already contained the CoreGraphics fix, which is why 27.0.1 has no security content of its own.
What This Means for Intel Macs
This is the first security-only update for Tahoe since it became the final macOS for Intel Macs. It is also a preview of the next two years: Apple will keep patching Tahoe with releases like this one until roughly autumn 2028, but Intel Macs get no new features from here. Our guide to how long macOS gets security updates has the full timeline.
How to Update
Open System Settings → General → Software Update. On an Apple Silicon Mac still on Tahoe, you'll see both the Tahoe 26.7.1 update and a larger Upgrade Now button for macOS 27; pick the Tahoe entry to stay where you are. Each update needs one restart. If the installer stalls, see stuck on “Preparing Update”.
Update, October 26: all three releases have since been superseded by macOS 27.2, Tahoe 26.7.2 and Sequoia 15.8.2, which include these fixes. See macOS 27.2 released.
