"Pro Mode" in macOS Sonoma 14.4 Increases Performance for Demanding Tasks

By macOSUpdate Team

Archive: macOS Sonoma 14.4 introduced Pro Mode, an option for supported high-performance MacBook Pro models that lets the system run faster for longer by allowing higher fan speeds and sustained power.

What Pro Mode Does

Apple Silicon laptops automatically balance performance, heat, and noise. Pro Mode shifts that balance toward maximum sustained performance: the fans are allowed to spin up sooner and faster, keeping clock speeds high during long, demanding workloads like video exports, large compiles, and 3D rendering.

It's the inverse of Low Power Mode — instead of conserving energy and reducing performance, it prioritizes throughput at the cost of fan noise and battery.

Which Macs Support It

Pro Mode is limited to higher-end MacBook Pro models with the cooling headroom to benefit. Fanless MacBook Air models don't offer it, since they have no active cooling to ramp up.

How to Enable Pro Mode

  1. Open System Settings → Battery.
  2. Find the Energy Mode control.
  3. Choose High Power (Pro Mode) when plugged in for demanding tasks.
  4. Switch back to Automatic for everyday use to keep the machine quiet and cool.

Should You Use It?

For most users, Automatic mode is the right default. Reach for Pro Mode only when you're running sustained heavy workloads and want every bit of performance — and expect louder fans and faster battery drain in exchange. For the opposite goal, see our guide on improving battery life.
