Apple Releases macOS Monterey 12.7.3 and Big Sur 11.7.10 Security Updates

By macOSUpdate Team

Archive: Alongside macOS Sonoma 14.4, Apple released security-only updates for two older macOS versions — macOS Monterey 12.7.3 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.10 — keeping Macs that can't run newer releases protected.

Why These Updates Matter

Apple typically maintains the two macOS versions before the current one with security patches. When Sonoma was current, that meant Monterey and Big Sur continued to receive critical fixes — important for older MacBooks, iMacs, and Mac minis that aren't eligible for the latest release.

What's Fixed

  • WebKit: Patches for memory-corruption flaws that could allow malicious web content to execute code.
  • Kernel: Fixes for privilege-escalation vulnerabilities.
  • System frameworks: Additional hardening across CoreMedia, ImageIO, and other components shared with newer macOS lines.

Neither update adds features — they are strictly maintenance releases.

Who Should Install Them

If your Mac runs Monterey or Big Sur and can't upgrade to a newer macOS, install these updates as soon as possible. If your Mac is eligible for a newer version, upgrading is the better long-term choice for both features and ongoing support.

How to Update

  1. Open System Preferences → Software Update.
  2. Install macOS Monterey 12.7.3 or Big Sur 11.7.10 when it appears.
  3. Back up with Time Machine first, and keep your Mac plugged in.
